Good Old-Fashioned Simple Recipes for Tea Time
There is something rather lovely about tea time, whether it be High Tea, Afternoon Tea, a Family Tea or Sunday Tea. So, today’s post Vintage Tea Time Recipes is all about tea time recipes.
A delightful selection of Vintage Old-Fashioned recipes, perfect for Tea Time, and simple too. Some recipes are over 100 years old, and have stood the tests of time.
Some are old family favourites that are still hugely popular; and some are frugal wartime recipes that have never been more relevant as food and energy prices rise.
Today’s collection of Vintage Tea Time Recipes range from sweet and tempting, to savoury and filling. We are in the midst of the Dog Days of Summer……those hot, sultry, airless and lazy days between July the 3rd and the 11th of August.
Food is simpler, with salads, sandwiches and simple bakes and cakes being popular. I tend to bake in the cool of the morning, before it becomes too hot.
Recipes that are popular are scones, all types of cakes, tarts, quiches and flans. Salads in all guises make a regular appearance, as well as “no-cook” recipes. Grilled meat and fish is cooked outside on the BBQ, as are seasonal veggies.
My favourite tea time is Sunday Tea – that time in the early evening, before Countryfile on the telly, when the heat of the day is done.
Sunday lunch or brunch is a distant memory, and hunger pangs set in after a long country walk. The light in early August is still bright until 9pm at least, and the old scrubbed table is set for a family tea.
There’s home-cooked ham, freshly boiled eggs, piles of sandwiches made with homemade bread, a large cake, biscuits, fresh seasonal fruit, pickles and chutney, as well as a bowl of crisps for nibbling.
I hope you feel inspired to make some of the recipes I’ve shared below, they are set out in order of sweet and savoury.
And, please DO leave me a comment below if you make any of them for YOUR tea time table! Karen
