Retro Party Food for Children and Adults
Today’s recipe for Bunny on the Lawn isn’t so much a recipe, but an idea along with a simple method.
Beloved of old-fashioned children’s birthday parties, I made and served this on Easter Sunday, as a delectable retro desssert.
My Bunny on the Lawn is made from just TWO ingredients…..Strawberry Blancmange Powder and Lime Jelly.
I shared images of this delightfully kitsch pudding on my instagram account, and nearly everyone said the same thing……
…….“This reminds me of children’s birthday parties”. or “my grandmother/mother used to make this”
It seems it struck a very nostalgic note with nearly everyone who viewed and commented on it.
Anyway, it was just a bit of fun, and I wasn’t going to share the recipe/method here; however, I thought why not share it here, as a reminder
You can of course follow the instructions on the packets of jelly and blancmange, but I have copied them here for you, for ease.
The only pieces of equipement you will need are: a rabbit jelly mould; a measuring jug and a mixing bowl with wooden spoon.
Rabbit jelly moulds can still be bought online, especially on eBay and Etsy. But, your mum or grandmother may have one tucked away too!
The best ones are the ceramic ones, like mine, or tin and glass. There are modern silicone ones on offer, but they don’t come out as defined as the old ones.
Serve this Blancmange Bunny on a Lime Jelly Lawn for children’s birthdays, adult retro birthdays, or for the Easter and Spring tea time table.

Culinary Notes
- Use Chocolate, Vanilla or Raspberry blancmange in place of strawberry.
- Serve with evaporated milk for the full retro experience!
- If you spoon jelly all over the serving dish/plate, the blancmange bunny will not sit straight on top of it, hence leaving a space in the middle.
- Also great when served with ice cream and whipped cream.

Ingredients
- 1 x 35g Pearce Duff's Strawberry Blancmange
- 6 tablespoons white caster sugar
- 1 pint (570mls) whole milk
- 1 x 135g Hartleys Lime Jelly
- 1/2 pint (285mls) boiling water
- 1/2 pint (285mls) cold water
- Evaporated milk, to serve
Instructions
- Blancmange: Empty the contents of the sachet into a basin, then add the sugar plus 3 tablespoons of milk. Mix to a smooth paste.
- Take the remaining milk and heat in a saucepan until warm. Add a little of the warm milk to the paste, mix, then add the rest and stir well. Return it to the saucepan.
- Bring to the boil, then stirring continuously, simmer gently for at least a minute.
- Rinse your mould (or pudding bowls) with cold water and pour in the liquid.
- Allow to cool to room temperature and pop in the fridge for at least three hours.
Serve chilled and eat within two days. - Jelly: For best results separate into cubes and place into a jug/bowl. Add 1/2 pint (285ml) of boiling water and stir until dissolved.
- Add cold water to make up to 1 pint (570ml), stir then pour into mould/serving dish.
- Allow to cool, then refrigerate to set.
- To serve the Bunny on the Lawn: Find an oval serving dish/plate and break the jelly up into small pieces. Spoon the broken up jelly on to the serving dish/plate, leaving a blank space in the middle for the blancmange bunny.
- Gently run a butter knife around the top and the edge of the mould, give the mould a good shake then invert it onto the middle of the serving dish/plate. The blancmange bunny should come out very easily if it is set fully and you wet the mould before pouring the blancmange in.
- Serve with evaporated milk for the full retro experience!
