Anyone for Cricket?
The Cricket Club Sandwich for British Sandwich Week
This is a rapid post for today as I am meeting friends in London for lunch, and I need to get this scheduled to publish before I shoot off. However, to continue with the support for the best thing since sliced bread, the sarnie, I am sharing my second sandwich recipe for British Sandwich Week. Think Cricket Tea but not as refined, think big rustic sandwiches with prime British cheese and ham in them……think a hefty meal betwixt three slices of bread, and you will have some idea of what to expect when presented with Cricket Club Sandwich………this is NOT for the faint hearted or dainty, this is a “man-sized” butty! This is the kind of sandwich that built Britain, it’s a meal in its own right and is fabulous for picnics and lunch boxes, if you can find a box or bag big enough to hold it!
A triple decker sandwich to satisfy the hunger of any midfielder or batsman and prefect for the cricket tea. Made with thick slices of oatmeal or granary bread and filled with a tempting array of local ingredients: roast ham, Wensleydale cheese, fresh tomatoes and chutney. This sandwich is especially tasty if you can use home-made chutney and home-made bread, and make it sliced to order. This recipe was originally developed, written and subsequently published in Country Kitchen magazine, when I worked for them, but as it is British Sandwich Week, I am unwrapping it from its greaseproof paper and I’m sharing it again today.
So, whilst I jaunt off to wine and dine with some of my lovely blogger chums, I have made you a round of sarnies before I go…..the bread that is used in the sandwiches that are shown in the photographs is my Farmhouse Oatmeal Bread, and the chutney is also home-made too….Wild Plum and Onion chutney, the recipe will be posted on my blog soon……although I do have a nice recipe here: Old Fashioned Scottish Apple and Ginger Chutney. See you later with all my promised photos, news and new recipes…..have a great Wednesday, it’s looking like it is going to be a sunny day here in North Yorkshire, I hope the sun is out where you are too. Karen.

Ingredients
- 3 slices oatmeal or granary bread
- British butter, or spread of your choice
- 1 thick slice of British roast ham
- 40g Wensleydale cheese, crumbled
- ½ tomato, sliced thinly
- 1 tablespoon chutney, or pickle
- Salt and pepper to taste
Note
Home-made bread and chutney are great when used in this sandwich.
Directions
Step 1 | Butter two slices of bread on one side and one slice on both sides. Place the one slice of buttered bread on a plate and lay the tomato slices on top – season with salt and pepper to taste, then add the crumbled Wensleydale cheese. |
Step 2 | Place the twice buttered slice of bread on top, and then lay the ham on top – spoon the chutney over the ham and place the last slice of buttered bread on top. |
Step 3 | Press gently but firmly and then cut with a breads knife into four squares rather than triangles. Serve immediately with a cuppa! (Serves one hungry person.) |

Looks delicious, Karen. I can’t get Wensleydale here. Would a Feta be a good substitute? Blue?
Karen says
Thanks Noeleen! Feta would make a good sub as it is a salty and crumbly cheese! And do use blue cheese for a change!

mmm I love sandwiches. Great ideas here. x
Karen says
Thanks Susan – just cheese and ham with chutney really, but a nice combo….
Mary says
I love British sandwiches – just the right amount of filling – unlike here in the US where they’re stuffed!!
Mary x
Karen says
I agree Mary – too much filling becomes sickly and also messy to eat…..LOVELY to see you here, I am so behind with my comments, must visit your blog kitchen soon!

The club sandwich is my absolute favourite and something I often choose if out for a casual lunch, especially when the bread is toasted. I generally like wholemeal or granary bread, cucumber pickles are my faves although the tomato chilli jam I made last year became my new favourite, can’t be beaten.
Karen says
I also LOVE toasted club sarnies, with gherkins and also roast chicken and mayo…..but am LOVING the combo you mentioned!
Denise says
YOu can’t go past a good sandwich can you.
Karen says
A good sandwich is hard to beat Denise!
