~ We Should Cocoa ~
Chocolate Quote:
Dawn French – “I never do any television without chocolate. That’s my motto and I live by it. Quite often I write the scripts and I make sure there are chocolate scenes. Actually I’m a bit of a chocolate tart and will eat anything. It’s amazing I’m so slim.”

A “Camp” of Chocolate Rose Fairy Cakes! |
Ah, chocolate, the food of Gods and Goddesses, that addictive brown stuff that gets us all wobbly and flushed with cocoa bean lust……..actually, I have to own up here, it doesn’t get me that lustful most of the time, I LOVE it now and then, but I’m not a chocoholic by any means. But when I read the We Should Cocoa challenge for August over at Chocolate Log Blog which happens to be Roses this month, I thought I can do that ~ I use roses in cooking and baking quite often and I DO like chocolate when the mood takes me, so away to my kitchen I scurried, to concoct a chocolate rose recipe for the event. And here it is, with fairy bells and elfin whistles, Chocolate Rose Fairy Cakes.
My Chocolate Rose Fairy Cakes |
Now when is a fairy cake a cup cake? Never in my book, fairy cakes are wee little things whilst a cup cake is a more butch affair; and butterfly cakes are the ones with the wings on top of them, and buns are little fruit cakes baked in paper cases………………oh my, doesn’t it get confusing in the cake kitchen ~ you should cocoa! Now these are definitely fairy cakes, they were made in a small cake/bun tin with small cake cases, not a muffin tin with muffin cases……oh no, now I have brought muffins into the equation…..now muffins to me are those eternal British bread cakes/buns that are cooked on a griddle and split whilst hot and then lathered with butter……okay, okay, I’ll button it for now!
My Chocolate Rose Fairy Cakes |
But to get back to challenge and chocolate and roses…….I am pretty pleased with my creation and the “fairy test team” really liked them too; they are basically little chocolate cakes with a rose water and chocolate butter-cream topping and crystallised rose petals as decoration. I always make my own crystallised rose petals, I will post my method here one day, but when I went to my tin of petals, they had gone all sticky with the heat and humidity, so I had to use commercial crystallised rose petals instead, which were nice but not as fine and delicate as mine are.

However, I think the little cakes turned out really well and I am sure I have fulfilled the challenge for August insofar as I have combined chocolate and roses in a recipe! So here we go, here is my very own Chocolate Rose Fairy Cake recipe……….oh yes, I have been pondering, what is the collective noun for Fairy Cakes…………..could it be a “Camp of Fairy Cakes” perchance?

Recipe:
A Camp of Fairy Cakes…. |
Dainty little ethereal cakes with crystallised rose petals, exotic rose water and 85% chocolate butter-cream, pure magic for your taste buds……..
(Makes 16 small cakes or 8 to 10 larger cakes)
My Chocolate Rose Fairy Cakes |
INGREDIENTS:
Cakes:
140g (5ozs) softened butter
140g (5ozs) golden caster sugar
3 medium eggs
100g (4ozs) self raising flour
25g (1 oz) sifted cocoa
Topping and Decoration:
85g (3ozs) 85% chocolate, broken into pieces
85g (3ozs) soft unsalted butter
140g (5ozs) sifted icing sugar
1 teaspoon rose water
crystallised rose petals
METHOD:
Pre-heat oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Put 16 small cake cases into a cake/bun tin.
Tip all of the ingredients for the cakes into a large mixing bowl and beat for 3 to 4 minutes with a electric hand whisk until smooth and glossy.
Divide the mixture between the cake cases so they are about three quarters full and then bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until well risen. Allow to cook in the tin for a minute before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Microwave the chocolate in a bowl for one minute, or until just melted. (You can also do this in a heatproof bowl over a pan of boiling water.)
Cream the sugar and butter together until light and fluffy and then add the melted chocolate ~ beat well. Add the rose water and mix it into the chocolate butter-cream.
Spread the chocolate butter-cream in the cakes, not too smoothly, just pile it on! Then sprinkle the crystallised rose petals over the top to decorate. Arrange the cakes on an attractive plate and watch them fly away………sorry!

I've been pondering the differences between fairy cakes and cupcakes too. Fairy cakes do seem smaller, perhaps more delicate than their often brash, razzle-dazzle iced cupcake cousins? Hmmm…..not sure that'll make it into any dictionary definition any time soon! These look delightful Karen- a very enjoyable read and another super post!
Marie says
Fairycakes, cupcakes, a rose by any other name. These look fabulously delicious Karen!
Annie says
I am so with you on the fairy cake versus muffin thing! And these just look such fun, and very tasty. Henceforth, when I see a plate of small, fancy cakes I shall think of them collectively as a 'camp'!
Karen S Booth says
Kate ~ thanks! I have just been to admire your Tiffin, what a great idea for We Should Cocoa! Yes, I think cupcakes are the more brash cousins of Fairy cakes…..I think your dictionary definition should be added actually!

These look so great, I love that they have a dash of fairy magic to them 🙂 I must admit, I am totally addicted to chocolate, just like my dad and already my daughter! We just get in a mood where we need SOMETHING chocolate. That British "drinking chocolate' my husband brought home from the store has been most helpful in that regard 🙂 i know these would be too!~

I'd call them a "gaggle" of Fairy cakes. Just me, one of those words I enjoy

OH my goodness Karen, I need one of those right now! They look so tasty!
Mary says
What a delicious looking cake. it would be perfect anytime but especially for tea. I think a fairy cake is the name the British give to a cupcake made with a light sponge or angelfood cake batter. Just a guess mind you. I hope you have a great day. Blessings…Mary

Choclette says
Love your camp of fairy cakes – will it get adopted as a collective name I wonder? Great recipe and they look so good. Chocolate and pink is a lovely colour combination. I was so hoping someone would showcase some home-made crystallised rose petals – such a shame yours decided not to play. I may or may not have time to get around to it, but it was my original intention. Great entry, thanks for participating.
Brownieville Girl says
They look perfectly wonderful – I'd really love to try one!
Karen S Booth says
Thanks Choclette! I had fun with this challenge! I could have made more crystallised rose petals but the weather is very humid and muggy here, so I used my commercial ones instead.
Great challenge thanks!
