Finding the Joy of Being in the Kitchen This Autumn – With the arrival of autumn, we may find ourselves spending more time at home than we did during the summer, with cosy supper recipes and preserving the season.
With the arrival of autumn, we’re all going to find ourselves spending more time at home than we did during the summer. For the next few months, until the return of spring, we will be cooking heartier meals comprising soups, stews and casseroles, as well as preserving autumn’s bounty whilst getting into the rhythm of the season. But what can you do indoors to keep things interesting? One option is to get into the kitchen and improve your cooking and baking skills. Below, we take a look at how you can enjoy this process, with some seasonal ideas how to cosy up in the kitchen.
Make Your Kitchen Inviting
It’s dark outside, which gives you ample opportunity to get into the kitchen and begin cooking, but you won’t want to if your kitchen isn’t inviting. As such, the first thing you should focus on is making your kitchen look and feel as warm and inviting as possible. Remember, you’re not working in the kitchen because you have to do, you’re doing it because you want to. So make it a good space. That could mean de-cluttering, creating additional work-space, and switching off the lights and lighting candles to create a cosy feeling.
Get the Right Tools
If you’re going to make a variety of seasonal favourites, then you’ll need to have some special tools. A blender and slow cooker all come into their own during the autumn and winter, as they can be used to make an endless amount of delicious, warming, healthy foods. If you haven’t already got them, then add them to your shopping list; they don’t have to be expensive, especially if you’re using Amazon discount and promo codes. Once you’ve upgraded your equipment, you’ll be able to enjoy the cooking process with ease and convenience.
Warming Recipes
It’s cold, it’s raining, it’s windy. But at least you’ve got nowhere to be. This is the ideal time to get into the kitchen and get cooking. But what do you make? If you’re a relative novice in the kitchen, we recommend starting with soups. They’re super easy to make, and once you’ve made your first one, you can get super creative and make a whole variety of different kinds. Add some homemade bread (more on that later), and you’ll have a delicious lunch. From there, progress to stews. You’ll be eating heartily but well, that’s for sure.
Don’t Forget Baking
If autumn was made for one thing, it’s baking. Is there anything better than the smell of fresh bread or biscuits filling the air? We really don’t think so. While most people have the minimum cooking skills to make a meal, they’ve never attempted baking in their life. It’s super simple, and the creations that come out of the oven will be much more delicious than anything you could buy in a supermarket.
Sharing With Friends
Now that you’re comfortable in the kitchen, it’s time to invite your friends around and share your creations. It’s a great way to spend a grey and miserable autumn day. Cheers to that!

Karen, your kitchen does look inviting. I to love the autumn kitchen season. Here (as with you), it’s the beginning of what I call the short days and early darkness. It’s a time you can cook an evening meal with the candles lite and for me a time to slow down. Autumn brings the bounty of our summers labor and, to me, the best ingredients of the season. I really enjoyed the read.
