Scones for Sunday and Birthday Parties!
~ Buttermilk and Mixed Fruit Scones with Sour Cherry Jam ~
It’s the day after the party………the kitchen still looks like a bomb as hit it, and there are acres of food under cling film, which are covering every available surface. My mum was the chief cook and baker for my birthday this year, and as ever, the table was groaning under the weight of freshly baked pies, tarts, cakes, scones, bread rolls, sausage rolls, vol au vents and sundry other delicious treats……as well as salads, coleslaw, pickles, chutneys, mustard, jams, clotted cream and cold cuts of ham, chicken and fresh jumbo prawns. Freshly cooked salmon and watercress made for delicious sandwiches and there was a fresh strawberry flan to complete the picture. I will share all the party food, as well as some recipes and photos later, but for today I want to introduce you to a FABULOUS scone recipe, Buttermilk and Mixed Fruit Scones with Sour Cherry Jam……….although these scones can be served with any jam, this is how we ate them yesterday for the party.
Yesterday was a fabulous day; it was the usual mix of manic baking and preparation as well as a drop of eccentric party revelry and the inevitable late guest………..my daughter, whose classic Mini Cooper decided to be a little frisky on the A1, and therefore required a lift on a recovery lorry back home…….apparently “Mabel” the mini did not like the petrol she was fed at one of the motorway petrol stations and started to misbehave! Anyway, she (Hannah, my daughter) finally made it home about two hours after the party had started (we saved her a plate of food) and it was only then that the bottles of fizz were liberated…..not champagne, but Vouvray, my favourite fizzy tipple. My mum is 79 years old, and she is JUST amazing, she STILL bakes and cooks and is a fabulous cake maker. Some of her cakes are already on my blog here: A Kaleidoscope of Fancies – Fancy Little Cakes & My Mum’s Cake Shop! Guest Post.
It wasn’t just my mum that was busy in the kitchen yesterday, but my dad was washed the salad and was also caught washing the dishes later on…….it was a REAL family team effort and I am EXTREMELY lucky to have such lovely parents – THANKS Mum and Dad! I was thoroughly spoiled and had a lovely day, it was one of the first times in ages that so many family members had made it together for a celebration…..a wonderful time! But back to the scones recipe; this is a VERY easy recipe that is made special by the addition of buttermilk, which makes them so light and airy…….and for me, the VERY best jam to serve with these scones is a good home made sour cherry jam. Although clotted cream would also be a great “naughty but nice” addition, I feel with a good home-made jam all that is needed is a little butter……..these scones were part of the tea party table yesterday, and the ones that are left, can be reheated today in a warm oven for the second sitting………..actually, I am not sure now I think about it if there are any left! I am shooting off now, we are all going out for a family Sunday Lunch, so see you later with more tales of cake and party festivities! Have a GREAT Bank Holiday Sunday, Karen.

Ingredients
- 8 ounces (200g) self-raising flour
- salt, to taste
- 2 ounces (50g) currants, raisins and sultanas
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons caster sugar
- 2 ounces (50g) butter
- 1 egg, beaten and mixed with 1/4 pint (150ml) buttermilk
- fresh double cream or clotted cream, to serve
- jam, of your choice
- butter, to spread
Note
Eat these hot, split & spread with fresh churned butter, fresh cream and homemade jam, preferably sour cherry jam as shown in the photos.
Directions
Step 1 | Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder into a bowl and add the sugar and butter. |
Step 2 | Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. |
Step 3 | Gradually mix in the egg and buttermilk mixture to make a dough, saving any excess to glaze the tops of the scones. Add your fruit. |
Step 4 | Gently knead the dough on a lightly floured work surface until smooth. |
Step 5 | Roll out the dough to about 1/2″ thick, then cut out 2″ rounds with a plain or fluted cutter, kneading and re-rolling the dough until it is all used up. |
Step 6 | Arrange scones on baking sheets then brush tops with the milk and egg mixture. Bake in the oven at 230°C (450°F) mark 8 for 10 to 15 minutes, until well risen and lightly golden. Cool on a wire rack. |
Step 7 | Whip the fresh cream until stiff. Split the scones and fill with butter, jam and fresh cream. |

Sounds like you had a great time, despite the worry over the late arrival. You deserve to be thoroughly spoiled, I suspect it doesn’t happen very often. Your birthday tea sounds amazing as does the sour cherry jam. Your mum sounds like mine, it’s that generation I think – keep going no matter what.
Karen says
Yes, mum must have baked for two days in a row! I had a great time thanks Choclette and the party food lives on……LOL! 🙂
Helen @ Fuss Free Flavours says
What a lovely party spread Karen. I am in awe of anyone that can produce more than 3 baked goods at once. I get horribly flustered and try to do much at the same time and somethng then goes horribly wrong.
Karen says
Thanks Helen, photos to follow……and the spread continues too! Mum is amazing and manages to throw 3 or 4 balls in the air at the same time!

So glad your birthday was fabulous – I won’t ask what number! And what a blessing that your parents are hail, hearty and obviously very handy with a mixing bowl, and washing up bowl too. I also love a buttermilk scone but have yet to find a favourite recipe. Hoping this is it! As for jam, I am a jam first girl, and my favourite is a nippy blackcurrant one, but sour cherry is a close second (and Lidl’s own is good in a pinch, although doubt that is an issue for you!). Not really into cream but a nice unsalted butter is a dandy sub for clotted cream, for me at least. Enjoy your leftovers, Karen. So jealous… x
Karen says
If I could send you a care package to you Kellie, I would in a flash! Thanks so much for your lovely comments, and I am also a big blackcurrant jam lover too….and funnily enough, I am not a HUGE cream lover, but I DO love a good unsalted butter! Karen

What a fabulous spread, and how wondeful that your Mother still bakes. If I want a cake on Sunday I’ll have to bake it myself! I’m so glad Hannah made it, I’m having a quite celebration as Tom is in Afghanistan, he says I won’t be 50 until he gets back in October!
Happy Birthday, and I’m really looking forward to lunch next week. Jude x
Karen says
When is your birthday Jude? I thought it was your friend’s birthdays and not yours? Have I missed it? 🙁 I am still hoping to get down for lunch next week…..still need to check times etc! I am always thinking you your Tom…..roll on October. Karen 🙂

I love the sound of the jam – sour cherry! How an earth do you make that? Sour cherry is one my favourite flavours. On scones too – heaven!
Karen says
We have a sour cherry tree in France and every year I spend hours pitting them and jamming them!
