Planning a Hiking Holiday – Hiking Holidays require careful planning, so what do you need, and how can you prepare yourself?
*Collaborative Post*
It’s fabulous to have the opportunity to travel, to experience as many different types of breaks as possible. However, that doesn’t mean that all travel experiences are equally accessible to all.
Some of them take a lot of planning and preparation, which is especially true for a hiking holiday. If you plan on trekking the wilderness, here are a few ways you need to get ready.
Get some practice
Before you head out into the hills, mountains, or other challenging terrain, you should try opting for shorter and somewhat gentler walking holidays first of all. Travel along more well-known explorer’s routes, for instance.
You should get used to a holiday that involves a lot of moving around on your own before you make it the core feature of a whole holiday. It can give you a good indication of how much you might need to work on your physical abilities, too.
Train to get Fit
It’s possible you may need to put some work into getting physically fitter in time for your hiking holiday. Hiking typically involves long and arduous treks that involve inclines, tough terrain, and being exposed to the elements.
It’s not something the average person can handle comfortably. Aside from working your way up to more challenging treks as you go, you should try some workout routines like those shown at REI.com that can help get you more physically capable.
Buy the Necessary Kit
Most hiking trips tend to be quite long, so you will need to ensure that you’ve got the necessary equipment to keep you safe. You might not have the option to simply stop mid-way if you’re feeling uncomfortable, dehydrated, or are otherwise not well prepared.
Sites like Kokodagear.com can recommend all manner of equipment and kit for different trips, including hiking gear. This includes what kind of clothes you should be wearing, what to pack, the right bags to pack them with, and more.
Research
Make sure that you know as much as you can about the area that you plan on hiking in before you actually get out there. Most popular routes have guides written on them, as seen at Alltrails.com, which explain what kind of terrain and challenges you can expect. You should be sure to check on the regional weather and climate as well, so you can enjoy walking when the weather is most likely to be suited to your personal level of fitness and experience.
Bring a friend
It might be a good idea to take a friend with you. After all, if you do end up in a tricky or dangerous situation, you want to make sure that you have someone there who is able to help you if necessary. Plus, it’s easier to share the load of things like first aid kits, water bottles, extra clothes, and more if you have two people carrying them.
Above all, make sure you’re physically prepared, with the right equipment, knowledge, and expectations before you head out for a long hiking holiday. Your safety and wellbeing are the top priority, after all.
And, don’t forget to ENJOY the great outdoors!
