It’s British Mothering Sunday, (Mother’s Day) this Sunday the 30th of March, time to dust off the best china, bring posies of spring flowers into the house and bake cakes and other delicious treats for our mums. I was hoping to share a new recipe with you this year, but time and travel have stolen the few spare hours I had, so I am sharing some older recipes as well as some newly commissioned recipes with you all today. I DO have a wonderful spring cake recipe in mind, and I will be making it (and testing it!) next week, just in time for Easter and Mother’s Day around the rest of the globe.
Little Victoria Lemon Daisy Cakes
So, why is British Mother’s Day different to the rest of the world? For a start the correct name is Mothering Sunday, and the day originates from the practice of visiting your “mother church” or dioceses ; the Victorians then linked it to our more commercial mother’s day of today by suggesting that it was also a day to visit your “earthly” mothers and treat them to chocolates, flowers and cakes, as well as giving cards. Mothering Sunday in Britain is linked to the Christian calendar, and always falls on the 4th Sunday in Lent. Also known as Refreshment Sunday or Rose Sunday, it is a date linked with food and the relaxing of strict Lenten fasting, hence the opportunity to enjoy eggs, butter and of course cake!
Cheese and Broccoli Spring Onion Tartlets
It’s one of my favourite days in the British calendar of feasts and festivals, and if I can’t visit my mum, I always make sure she has a card and a gift to open and enjoy on the day. If I am able to visit her, then I always arrive bearing cake and flowers. I think that all of today’s recipes for spring cakes would be more than welcome and appropriate for this special day. As well as cakes, my recipe for little cheese and vegetable tarts, cut out in the shape of daisies (flowers) would also make a welcome appearance on the tea time table, plus they are so pretty too, and more importantly they are meat-free, as my mum is a vegetarian.

So, what’s on the menu in my Mothering Sunday recipe share? Well, we have cake and cakes, of course. We also have little savoury tarts, scones and some dainty sandwiches. All that is needed then is to make a bog pot of freshly brewed tea, or maybe some fresh coffee if your mum’s are like mine and prefer a milky coffee. Push the boat out for the sandwiches, and well as cucumber why not make some cucumber and smoked salmon sandwiches, or cream cheese and mixed herbs.

A big bowl of salad and some freshly boiled eggs are also wonderful accompaniments for a special Mothering Sunday tea, and I often like to make a fruit cake. Wish I’d read this earlier. I was trying to explain to my mum and co. today that Mothering Sunday was something to do with the Church, only I couldn’t remember quite what!
I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen real daisies on a cake Karen – lovely.

very pretty collection of bakes. The posy is what piqued my memory most though, I remember my Sunday School class being turned over to making victorian posies for us to take home to our mothers when I was about eight. And I really do remember my mum’s face when I presented her with my own raggedy posy!

Firstly – I’ve just found your blog, and I just love it. It’s Mother’s Day here in Australia this Sunday (11th May). I am contemplating a menu, but keep deviating towards spring produce, because it seems more appropriate. Arg!
