How Cool is your Fridge?

Old Bay Shrimp Recipe
Just how cool is your fridge, I was asked, and NO, it’s not the temperature, but my “fridge street cred”! Well, my fridge is a trifle packed at present, as I have LOTS of recipe development jobs to do, and it’s very well stocked………..
…….as you can see, it’s packed to the gunnels! So, what’s in my fridge? Well, there’s lots of salad, including grated carrot which we love, orange juice, cheese, grated cheese, cat food(!), cream, home-made blood orange curd, crème fraîche, butter, margarine, anchovies, sauces, chutney, pickles, sliced ham, sliced cheese, milk, goat’s mill and a bottle of lemonade. (Surprisingly, there’s no wine, I must have drank it all!)
What does my fridge say about me? I hate to think, although I think it’s fairly well organised given how much I’ve managed to ram into it! If you fancy sharing your fridge with the world, Homebase have a great competition on at the moment……here’s how to enter it:
What does your fridge door say about you? Snap a picture and show us how cool your fridge is for the chance to WIN some fabulous prizes including a new Bush Fridge Freezer.
If you finish in first place you will have the option of choosing either a Silver or Black Bush Fridge Freezer. Our second place winner will an exclusive Leith’s cookery course. For our third place prize, you’ll get a Naked Wine Box (12 bottles worth £120) and for fourth place 3 lucky winners will get a Riverford recipe box of their choice.
- Step 1 – Snap a picture of your fridge freezer
- Step 2 – Share through your social media accounts (Twitter / Instagram), including the hashtag #KeepYourCool @Homebase_UK
- Step 3 – That’s it, find your photograph in our gallery below!
I’m sure there will be LOTS of photos showing off fridge magnets – I’m a bit of an anti-fridge magnet person, (I realise that puts me in the minority) and the only ones I have on my fridge are these handy conversions! But ignore me and my fridge magnet phobia, and just snap a photo of your fridge to be in a with a chance of winning. Before I go, I’d like to share a fabulous little recipe with you, Old Bay Prawns/Shrimp in Wine with a Spicy Creamy Dip, which makes good use of several ingredients I have stored in my fridge! Good luck, Karen

Ingredients
- 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) king prawns or shrimp, raw and unpeeled
- 2 glasses of dry white wine
- 1 small shallot or onion, peeled and diced finely
- 2 to 4 cloves garlic, peeled and diced finely
- 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning
- 1 lemon, cut in half
Dip
- 6 tablespoons high quality ready-made mayonnaise, OR homemade mayonnaise
- Several dashes of tabasco, or any other hot chilli sauce ~ to taste juice of 1/2 lemon
- 1 tablespoon tomato sauce
- 1 tablesoon tomato puree
- 1 teaspoon of garlic granules, OR 2 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and minced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Note
A light and luscious meal of Old Bay poached prawns/shrimp, just perfect for an elegant “ladies who lunch” party or a balmy summer evening on the terrace……I used king prawns for this recipe and also used a high quality ready-made mayonnaise for the dip, for ease and speed.
Directions
Step 1 | Put the prawns/shrimp into a large pan and add the wine, lemon halves, onion or shallot and garlic. Add the water to just cover the prawns/shrimp, and then add the Old Bay seasoning. Stir well. |
Step 2 | Cook over a high heat for about 5 minutes, or until the prawns are pink and cooked. Strain the prawns/shrimp (keeping the cooking liquor for a soup or fish sauce ~ I often freeze it until I need it.) and place them into a large bowl. |
Step 3 | Allow lots of paper napkins and a spare bowl for the prawn/shrimp peelings and eat immediately with a mixed salad, crusty bread and the spicy dip. |
Step 4 | To make the dip, just whiz or mix all the ingredients together and taste before adjusting the seasoning ~ we like it very spicy. Serve in a separate bowl or in individual dishes with the prawns/shrimp. |

Alison says
oooh you have the same fridge magnets as me! Great minds!
Karen Burns-Booth says
They are so handy aren’t they Alison? Karen
Glamorous Glutton says
Your fridge is packed. I have to admit, I’m anti fridge magnets too. There’s nothing on our fridge, I love going to the door and not having to take in all that clutter. Not the same for the insides though. With two boys at home and Mr Glam, keeping the fridge organised is a losing battle! Great recipe Karen, really tasty. GG
Karen Burns-Booth says
I’ve just never “got ” the magnet thing, call me a party pooper GG but I like my fridge naked! LOL! On the outside anyway! 😉
Lavender lively says
Hi Karen. Is this contesr open to US residents? Thank you. I couldn’t locate the rules.
Karen Burns-Booth says
I don’t think so Lavender Lively, as the prizes are large and also the course on offer is in the UK.
Galina V says
I confess I am partial to good old magnets. I don’t think I’m brave enough to show the chaos inside my fridge to anyone. 🙂
Karen Burns-Booth says
OH go on Galina, you may win a new fridge! Some of the photos in the competition are of the outside too! Karen
Jacqueline Meldrum says
That is one full fridge. It just made me hungry Karen. Thanks for entering it is Fridge Spy. The roundup is now live if you want to have a nosey. I need you to answer a question while you are over there.
