A Video, Yorkshire Fish Pie and Fish & Chips in a Basket
with Mushy Peas
for Fish on Friday
Today’s Fish on Friday post is a TRIPLE one – as I am sharing THREE fish recipes and a video too……..back in May of this year, I went up to Edinburgh to do some videos for Fish is the Dish, as part of my Fish Fanatic role…….it was a fantastic opportunity, and I have to admit that I LOVED being in front of the camera and LOVED doing all my videos – I did three. The FIST video of me preparing one of my MOST Loved family recipes has just been published on the Fish is the Dish website, as well as You Tube…..the recipe I am demonstrating how to make is Yorkshire Fish Pie with a Rosti Potato Topping and Heather of Fish is the Dish released the video yesterday JUST in time for Yorkshire Day! Now I know you always add lbs when filmed, and I know we always think we look fatter than we are, but the fact of the matter is, that I WAS much heavier on the video than I am now, as I have subsequently been on a VERY strict diet and have lost nearly 2 stone…..however, even whilst I cringed at my chubby self on the video, I have to admit that the video was VERY well filmed and very well done and apart from my hefty dimensions, I actually quite liked how I came across and how I sounded too…….for most of the time! You can see the video by clicking on the photo above, or by going straight there here: Yorkshire Fish Pie Easy Recipe from Fish is the Dish or here: Yorkshire Fish Pie with a Rosti Potato Topping from Karen Burns-Booth.
Moving swiftly on from fish pies and fishy videos, my fish dish today is a good old-fashioned retro fish in a basket dish; do you remember those pub meals from the 70’s, everything was served in a basket – chicken in a basket, fish in basket, scampi in a basket, sausages in a basket…….so when I recently found some “plastic baskets” in a well-known bargain food chain, I snapped two packets up (they come in packs of four) and planned a retro revival pub grub meal……and the first recipe to star in my 70’s food baskets, is a version of my Real English Fish and Chips in Beer Batter. Instead of serving my fish on large battered pieces, I made “goujons”, another rather retro recipe, basically fish goujons are just posh fish fingers! I got my mum to cut out squares of newspaper, no one was safe or exempt from this retro meal plan, and then a square of greaseproof paper to sit on top of the newspaper! The mushy peas were by the company that is the male equivalent of a “spinster” (!) and I decanted them into small ramekins. Thus the complete meal was in “the basket” and the only thing left to do was to make sure there was ample malt vinegar and salt on the table!
The chips in the photos were frozen chips, as time was at a premium, well we DID have all the newspaper squares to cut out! However, I DO have a great recipe from home-made chips on my blog here, not that I am eating many chips now! Chips, Frites, Pommes Frites, French Fries.
That’s it for now, have a great weekend, and I HOPE you have a look at the video and maybe even try the recipe, which is VERY easy to make and would make a wonderful mid-week family supper! See you later with a VERY chocolatey Giveaway and with more recipes and chat! Karen

Hi Karen,
The video is really well done with a lovely recipe to boot! It’s always nice to hear and see the person behind the blog 🙂
Can you let me know your secret of losing 2 stone? I am ballooning rapidly! How do you manage to avoid eating all the lovely food you make?
Karen says
Thanks Jacqueline! Secrets are: Weight Watchers, always lose weight with them, and NO wine midweek and therefore NO snacking midweek and NO chocolate or biscuits!

Karen!… you are such a natural on that video… i’ve been saving this post for when I had some time to watch it and you look just BRILLIANT… I am very impressed. The filming is great and you come across very very well… the dish is also fab, so well-done you, you should be proud. I said at the beginning of this year that I wanted to put more video on to my blog but I think the production value of yours is what I need to aim for… so I just need to hire myself a camera crew!… well done honey…. lovely fish and chips recipe too, thank you xx
